What would it take for someone to sell you three “magic beans” for $10 at a farmer’s market?

Specifically, what kind of person would you buy magic beans from? You have no way of knowing if the beans are actually magical – they probably aren’t. But just how colorful a character would a magic bean salesman have to be before you willingly spent $10 for the experience of buying magic beans from an eccentric stranger?

I wouldn’t buy $10 magic beans from a young man with an undercut and suspenders with sailor tattooes on his forearms. He might be a nice guy – maybe I’d be friends with him. But I would not spend $10 for the experience of purchasing magic beans from him, unless they were actual real magic beans and he could prove that.

I might buy $10 magic beans from a small child in a wizard costume. It depends. Maybe if they’re really committed to the role – then I’m purchasing the privilege of interacting with them.

I might but $10 magic beans from an incredibly sexy, mysterious lady with long opera gloves and glittering eyes, but probably not – I might give her money just for smiling at me but I don’t think she’d really have the right vibe for selling magic beans. Potions, yes. Not beans.

I’d probably buy magic beans from a wild-haired, cheerful witch in overalls and mud boots, but that wouldn’t really be about the beans, it’d be about finding excuses to talk to her.

I’d absolutely buy magic beans from a toothless old person dressed entirely in hot pink or chartreuse who answered my questions with rambling non-sequiturs and told me long, scandalous, scientifically impossible stories about how things used to be.

I would buy three magic beans from the white haired woman who sits on the back of her pickup with dozens of jars of jelly laid out on a table in the abandoned fair ground. She doesn’t sell jelly; she sells potted plants. If you compliment her on her wooden sandals though, she will give you a jar of jelly. She asks if my children are twins every week, and is disappointed they aren’t twins every week. I would buy three magic beans for $10 from her.

On another note, I have traded a crocheted snowflake for ten acorns with a small, barefoot, blonde child in a white dress I encountered in the woods. Two of the acorns sprouted on the way home and I now have them growing in pots.

dude at some point the signs for the goblin market and the farmer’s market in your town got switched but your fae are too polite to say anything when you keep coming back

call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.

@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.

💅

Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.

Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?

Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant.

The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.

It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.

Projection is a hell of a drug.

this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman.

and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.

also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.

the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.

The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.

My original post got reported/ taken down I thought to make it again but clear

What is Article 13 about?

Article 13 is part of a new European Union copyright directive designed to protect creativity. However, the entry into force of Article 13 could have unintended consequences. For example, the framework under which services like YouTube may host content may change fundamentally. This would hurt the little creators and artists who are supposed to be protected by the directive.

In practice, platforms may then be forced to allow only content from a small number of large companies that conform to their copyright clearance programs. For websites, it would be too risky to host the original content of smaller creators, as websites would now be directly responsible for this content.

This would drastically change the Internet, as we know it, and mean that less content can be seen and shared in the EU.

What would be the undesirable consequences?

In its current formulation, Article 13 could prevent 13 million people in the EU from uploading content to platforms such as (means, other platforms will be endangered too) YouTube. Hundreds of thousands of jobs would be in jeopardy, including those of European creators, entrepreneurs and artists, and their employees.

European viewers could also lose access to billions of videos from creators and artists from around the world. That would also affect available content, including the countless instructional videos on YouTube with language and physics classes as well as instructions on a variety of topics. Also affected would be music content, including cover versions, remixes, and videos of live performances. EU citizens could no longer participate in current cultural events that take place on the Internet and shared.

Working together to find a better solution

The exact wording of Article 13 is not yet defined. Now it is crucial that it is written correctly. We would like to work out a better solution together with the MEPs. Raise your voice now, because the decision on the future of the Internet could finally be made at the end of the year.

Chinese fandoms are currently experiencing an actual Purge right now. Every fandom. Accounts are getting banned, all shipping wars has been put on hold. Everyone’s hiding their porn and moving them to ao3.

There’s reward money involved. A recent update to censorship law raised the maximum reward for reporting illicit online materials to 50k yuan (7000 USD), so some people are reporting porn like crazy right now, and apparently, BL fandoms have been especially targeted, where some even more tame things got maliciously misreported.

Anyway, it’s a mess. Content creators are just disappearing off the face of the internet left and right. Expect an influx of Chinese porn fics on AO3.

Well… if there’s one thing out of this mess… nothing bands warring ships/fandoms like censorship…

Seems like the cash reward will be

600,000 yuan ($86,000) from December 1st…!

Tweet pleading for people not to repost any fanart taken offline by Chinese creators

Hey guys, if some awesome person in China translated your fic into Chinese or created fan art, you really should spread the word! This could affect someone you know!

This is also a call out to all you fuckwits that repost art on Tumblr, twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Your negligence hurts people.

^^^

This is literally shitty and it has become worse and worse

Hopefully it will stop before long but just take care of how yiou take your stances on ao3 or what’s happening with Tumblr

A chinese homoerotic novel writer is sentenced to 10 years to prison because of “illegal publication”*  and “spread of obscene materials”. After that, China government set up bounty for reporting “illegal publication”. Everyone on weibo, lofter etc. is deleting thier posts.

China is using this act as a way of controling the freedom of speech, it’s not just a matter of “no homo”. They just use the fandom content creators as an easy target and a way to scare people off from writing and publishing things the government doesn’t like.

China is living the Nineteen Eighty-Four novel. Please don’t post chinese fan works, especially not with their original chinese artists/writers right now. You could literally ruin their life.

* in China every book has to be approved by the government before
publication. Anything against the government or with “the wrong idea” will be banned. Their government didn’t pay too much attention to fan books before, but in recent years, they are tightening their grip on their people. Fandom and their activities as a whole has become a target because 1) fandom and their creative community make self-publishing a thing and China doesn’t like that the people know it’s easy to print stuffs (to spread unwanted information/ideas etc. 2) fandom and their creative community is the easiest and obvious target because of the general anti LBGT+ envirnment, general public will support the gornment for “cleansing the society from obscenity” withouth thingking about 1)

this is a thing that just happened

The MSN article was posted Nov. 16, 2018

This censorship is not new. They’re just getting braver about cracking down on whatever they feel like cracking down on because China is in the middle of committing active genocide.

No one is stopping them. Almost no one is even discussing it. Entire peoples are being quietly vanished.

They came for the people, and they succeeded. Now they’re going after the writers. And the world is letting them do it.

The internet could change next week, and not in a good way

You may have heard about the efforts in Europe to reform copyright law. The debate has been ongoing in the European Parliament for months. If approved next week, these new regulations would require us to automatically filter and block content that you upload without meaningful consideration of your right to free expression.

We respect the copyrights and trademarks of others, and we take all reports seriously to ensure that your creative expression is protected. We make this clear in our Community Guidelines. There’s already a legal framework that works and is fair: Today we take down posts and media that contain allegedly infringing content when we receive a valid DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request. We also provide clear-cut ways for people to fight back if they believe their removed content was not a true violation. These instances are monitored and reported and live in our biannual transparency report

The suggestion to use automated filters for issues of copyright is short-sighted at best and harmful at worst. Automated filters are unable to determine whether a use should be considered “fair use” under the law and are unable to determine whether a use is authorized by a license agreement. They are unable to distinguish legitimate parody, satire, or even your own personal pictures that could be matched with similar photographs that have been protected by someone else. We don’t believe that technology should replace human judgment.

Tumblr is and always has been a place for creative expression, and these new regulations would only make it harder for you to express yourself with the freedom and clarity you do so now.

If you access Tumblr from Europe and want to act, you can find more information on saveyourinternet.eu

Please reblog this as much as you reblogged the posts about Net Neutrality.

If Article 13 is approved, European People might be basically banned from uploading any fan content.

You won’t get new fanfics from people in Europe.

You won’t get new gifs from people in Europe.

You won’t get new fanart from people in Europe.

Because they’ll be automatically filtered and blocked!

We might leave Tumblr and other fandom pages.

And if we’re getting all our content blocked?

You might lose some of your favourite followers/mutuals.

You might not get to read the rest of that fic you’re dying to read – simply because the writer lives in the wrong country.

So do whatever you can to help us stop this.

Reblog this.

CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO TELL THEM YOU DON’T WANT ARTICLE 13 TO BE APPROVED IF YOU’RE EUROPEAN! DO IT VIA THE HOMEPAGE

Yes call them. I’ve called mine. But also…

Nerds, early adopters, vidders and other fandom pioneers… we are going to have to save fandom again. We’ve done it before; we can do it again. We’re going to need archivists and devOps and every mod and smof you can rustle up from every dark corner and coffee stained IT basement you can think of.

Get reading the dat protocol, the Solid Pod – spread out and cover as much ground as you can. We’re going to need an encrypted, decentralised social network or two, art posting, video streaming, chat and search. All of these things exist right now but we need to put together some viable, accessible options for the community.

Someone has to be the next @astolat – make it you.

@limblogs Thank you for all the information you have posted about these interesting developments in peer-to-peer usage. Sadly, I am basically code-illiterate *and a bit worried about data security*, so are there any sources us non-IT geeks might consult to learn how this works?

Any help? Also check out https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/

I’m trying stuff out – other people who are trying stuff out, report back!  When I have something that seems workable I will try to write up some NOT WITHOUT YOU type  instructions for people like me (HUMANITIES MAJORS FFS).  In the meantime I am reblogging for the technically minded–but FYI I understand and agree with the principle here, and have for some time: the AO3 is centralized, and that’s awesome, but I think the next thing – the social thing, which is also the art and video thing – needs to be DECENTRALIZED but NETWORK-POWERED; a swarm powered by the COLLECTIVE OF US.

Need a little Holiday Help

Hi all!

First let me preface this buy saying I personally don’t need money. I’m good right now, that’s not what this is about.

But I am asking for money and here’s why.

I saw this great post here on tumblr about how hard it is for homeless women when they get their periods. Well, I have all these leftover birchboxes because I always thought they were too pretty to get rid and that there would be SOMETHING I could use them for.

Seems like I have.

I’m putting together these ten ‘menstruation boxes’ to give out to homeless women I come across here in New York City. Here’s what the box includes currently:

Right now I have:

  • Eight slim, but heavy flow pads.
  • Bags to protect the pads (they don’t have cases) that can also double as a trash bag.
  • Four panty liners
  • Four pieces of chocolate 😊

I want to add to them and this is where I could use your help. I want to include individual packets of Aleve as well as gift cards to Starbucks. The Aleve I can buy myself, but I want to include $10-$20 Bux cards, which adds up.

Starbucks is everywhere in this city, so easily accessible, and I figure, with it getting cold, being able to get a hot drink and a hot wrap or sandwich would go a long way.

If anyone would like to contribute, here’s my paypal.me/stephrc79 account. Or you can buy a digital card outright from Starbucks, in whatever dollar amount you want ($10 min) and send it to me at my gmail account (same user handle) and I’ll go get it for the boxes.

I really don’t need a lot of money AT ALL, but it’s a lot for at least me as one person. So if I get more than I need, I’m going to either try and make more boxes, time permitting, or donate to a local women’s shelter.

That’s all. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! 🎄🕎
