I recommend checking out the profile of the ao3 accounts. Some do mention alts on other sites, or even provide links.
Many authors also have their Tumblr info in the end notes of fics.
Anyone feel free to add new names or reblog with yourself, and/or link directly to your ao3 or others you want to promote, so the curious could know! Promote a writer or fifteen, and especially yourself ^^
There are a fair few on both sites, some I know of and actually remember names enough to link quickly @sylencia @asknotbug@hexadecimal00@pandafleur@raendown @kalira9 @flailinginlove@blackkatmagic @mantykora14 @glitteratti@kitsunekage88@mightyb013@artsiesforever@donkoogrr@hakuboo@pentapoda@uintuva@detectivepoet@thatrandomnpc@godaime-obito but really, there are SO many more, especially that don’t necessarily remember/know the exact same name so they showed up in dropbox option here. Or, I am not sure they are the same people, or I’d have had to double check ^^; (many a time I’ve looked up corresponding usernames and not been sure they are the same people, and left it be. Remember to fill out your profile on ao3 or mention you are the writer/link to ao3 in your Tumblr account header description if you want people to be able to connect the two! :p And info pages on Tumblr does not work in the app >.> they don’t even show up, so people like me don’t even know you have one most of the time <.<)
Does anyone who would have gone to Durmstrang (From the Nordics or Germanic or Eastern European countries) have strong feelings/headcanons/etc regarding Durmstrang that they’d like to share with me??? Like what language they’d speak or just idk. Halp.
They’d most likely use Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish. If I recall correctly, the school is near some mountains in Northern Europe , and they have very little daylight in the winter. That means it’s located near the arctic circle. Since the Ural Mountains are the geographic border between Europe and Asia, the mountains in question are most likely the Scandes, so the school is in either Sweden or Norway. Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian are similar enough for people to understand each other even though they don’t speak the exact same language.
This would mean that some students would have trouble with the language. I suppose if you hear it everyday from the day you’re 11 it’s not that difficult, but it does put non-native speakers at a disadvantage. It would take them a couple of years to catch up with the native speakers.
But let’s be real, a magic school with a radius that large would be a disaster. If it was founded in the Middle Ages, then there have been students from countries at war with each other. There were the two World Wars, the Cold War, and Soviet Union was still a thing when Harry started Hogwarts.
Just think about it. A school with wizard Nazis (not Death Eaters, actual wizard Nazis), wizard communists, wizards who hate Nazis, and wizards who hate communism, wizards whose families are on different sides in a civil war. They’d kill each other. That school would be a nightmare, though I would read the shit out of that.
Sorry it’s long, I could talk about this for hours 😅. Also sorry for my bad English, I’m too heated to spell check.
Detailed historiy of Durmstrang would make a very facinating read for this reason, not to mention all the past wars and conflict between Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway. I think they would speak mostly either Swedish or Norwegian since Denmark is so far south, and Swedish and Norwegian are the most similar languages. Plus there’s quite a few Finnish people who speak Swedish as their first language. In the current day they probably use a lot of English as well since it is difficult to find young scandinavians who don’t speak English lol. In the present the northern countries have a really good relationship and it would probably we very chill between the students of different nationalities
One headcanon of mine is that Durmstrang has to have some kind of a collaboration with the scandinavian governments since we have a legal school duty and can’t exactly just dissapear from the muggle education. I think the Swedish muggle government would demand Durmstrang to teach muggle levels of English, math and swedish because those subjects are considered “core” education and most likely the other scandinavian countries would probably demand the same… Plus way higher standards for safety/child protection than Hogwarts probably because boy we are strict about that.
Oooh and they probably se a ton of northern lights! And in the summer they have sun for 22-24 hours a day so I can imagine they would sometimes have classes or activities during the summer nights – that sounds like a ton of fun! Maybe they have reindeer and elk on the school grounds, the Swedish government once tried to make a cavalry of moose and it failed but who knows about potential magical elk?
the entire idea of durmstrang is such a mess and really show how jk Rowling has a very… Vague… Grasp on the geography and history of like. Most of Europe haha
Everyone speaks some sort of imagned “Eastern accent” when speaking English, but like. That is not really a concept (one could have a english tinged by a uralic language, a turkic language, a slavic language, a germanic langauge etc etc. But there is no such thing as a general “Eastern European accent).
When she claimed the school was in the mountains in scandinavia I was like: “nope jk this does just not work”.
So if it is in the north in the mountains ranges of scandinavia that entails its in sapmi, the lands of the saami.
a region which which Russia, Sweden/Finland, Denmark/Norway, all attempted to colonise and gain control but. the type colonisation politics of today, were the state steal saami lands and claim its “theirs” is in a historical perspective fairly recent.
My point is. How they gain the land to build the school? Did they steal it from a saami family? Was the school a part of swedish colonial settler projects of the 18th-19th century?
A school, used by the elites of the nordic states magical folk, raises alot of questions, if one locate it in sapmi, which jk Rowling appear to have done.
Now! Nothing wrong if it was presented as you know a school which lays on a foundations of the indigenous cultures of the eurasian arctic, but she had so clearly not choosen that angle so wtf jk Rowling…. (not that I would have trusted jk Rowling to do that in a respectful manner if she had done so, but like.)
Idk how to explain this to a international audience. But like. Swedish state institutions in the north of modern day sweden are useally at the OLDEST 17th century. And that is at the oldest. How did a school of what durmstrang is described as, just appear in sapmi?
I also agree with that but disappearing from the swedish school system would be impossible so they will have to have some sort of deal with the swedish state at least.
But even more complications I also think, back during when soviet existed….. How do the parents living in soviet explain to officials that they keep travelling to the area of the soviet/finland/norway border? Like….
Anyway, the concept durmstrang is such a damn mess!
Personally I think, with inspiration from some of the comments above, that for the nordic modern day states it would make most sense if the school most sent their kids was on Iceland, just because I feel that it could have a fun backstory of vikings starting it.
But, no matter were it is placed. I do think it would make sense if there was a old school which mostly kids from the nordic countries went to. Considering how the swedish state dealt with languages BEFORE the 19th century nationalism obsession with Swedish happened, I could imagne the school would have a practical approach to the languages, so people would go to different classes depending on which languages they speak, with the added feature that near related languages will have to train to understand eachother. Basically several parallel classes that are taught in different languages. And the students goes to the classes were they can understand the lessons.
So like they would be classes in finnish, the saami languages, swedish/danish/norwegian, Icelandic, färöiska and so on
I also imagne they would have class during the first years, were they learn how to understand the languages which are closer related to their own better.
I don’t think that would be so unrealistic honestly. Then their could be obligatoric to learn at least 1 of the other languages classes are hold on in school or something.
The teacher thing is simply solved by that to teach at the school one have to learn a lot of languages 😉
PS. I would also assume that their would also be uralic languages speaking indigenous people school somewhere. One actually founded by themselves, back in the day, and still in use.
One way to go around the Sapmi problem is to place to school in the south Scandies, like somewhere around Oslo. But honestly the concept of one school for like 4-5 countries is Such A Mess and there would be too many students, even if only a small percentage are wizards. It would make more sense to have one school in each country, at least nowadays.
Yeah it would make SO MUCH sense if we just had a seperate school for each country, at least. And like perhaps even. Like two schools per country *HP universe gasp* so one could have schools with different profiles and stuff.
Like imagne, Sweden and Denmark trying to share 1 magic school back in the day 😂😂
that would be a school…. With some tensions lmao
OMG SHE PUT IT IN SAAMI LANDS? *LOUD CACKLING* That might actually be WORSE than JKR’s insistence that everyone in Asia attends a sole Japanese school!
Tired of getting random alerts from other people’s stuff?
Yeah Tumblr turned that on for you. Gee thanks Staff.

Oh my GOD! Having spent all day getting stressed out getting notifications from the discourse on one stupid post I commented on as a joke, this is a gd lifesaver!
We have entered a phase of regression, and one of the easiest ways to see it is in our infrastructure: our roads and bridges look more like those in Thailand or Venezuela than the Netherlands or Japan. But it goes far deeper than that, which is why Temin uses a famous economic model created to understand developing nations to describe how far inequality has progressed in the United States. The model is the work of West Indian economist W. Arthur Lewis, the only person of African descent to win a Nobel Prize in economics.
In the Lewis model of a dual economy, much of the low-wage sector has little influence over public policy. Check.
The high-income sector will keep wages down in the other sector to provide cheap labor for its businesses. Check.
Social control is used to keep the low-wage sector from challenging the policies favored by the high-income sector. Mass incarceration – check.
The primary goal of the richest members of the high-income sector is to lower taxes. Check.
Social and economic mobility is low. Check.
Temin says that today in the U.S., the ticket out is education, which is difficult for two reasons: you have to spend money over a long period of time, and the FTE sector is making those expenditures more and more costly by defunding public schools and making policies that increase student debt burdens.
Even with a diploma, you will likely find that high-paying jobs come from networks of peers and relatives. Social capital, as well as economic capital, is critical, but because of America’s long history of racism and the obstacles it has created for accumulating both kinds of capital, black graduates often can only find jobs in education, social work, and government instead of higher-paying professional jobs like technology or finance— something most white people are not really aware of. Women are also held back by a long history of sexism and the burdens — made increasingly heavy — of making greater contributions to the unpaid care economy and lack of access to crucial healthcare.
How did we get this way?
What happened to America’s middle class, which rose triumphantly in the post-World War II years, buoyed by the GI bill, the victories of labor unions, and programs that gave the great mass of workers and their families health and pension benefits that provided security?
Around 1970, the productivity of workers began to get divided from their wages. Corporate attorney and later Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell galvanized the business community to lobby vigorously for its interests. Johnson’s War on Poverty was replaced by Nixon’s War on Drugs, which sectioned off many members of the low-wage sector, disproportionately black, into prisons. Politicians increasingly influenced by the FTE sector turned from public-spirited universalism to free-market individualism. As money-driven politics accelerated (a phenomenon explained by the Investment Theory of Politics, as Temin explains), leaders of the FTE sector became increasingly emboldened to ignore the needs of members of the low-wage sector, or even to actively work against them.
Temin notes that “the desire to preserve the inferior status of blacks has motivated policies against all members of the low-wage sector.”
What can we do?
We’ve been digging ourselves into a hole for over forty years, but Temin says that we know how to stop digging.
If we spent more on domestic rather than military activities, then the middle class would not vanish as quickly.
The effects of technological change and globalization could be altered by political actions.
We could restore and expand education, shifting resources from policies like mass incarceration to improving the human and social capital of all Americans.
We could upgrade infrastructure, forgive mortgage and educational debt in the low-wage sector,
reject the notion that private entities should replace democratic government in directing society, and
focus on embracing an integrated American population.
We could tax not only the income of the rich, but also their capital.
We have a structure that predetermines winners and losers. We are not getting the benefits of all the people who could contribute to the growth of the economy, to advances in medicine or science which could improve the quality of life for everyone — including some of the rich people.”
Along with Thomas Piketty, whose Capital in the Twenty-First Century examines historical and modern inequality, Temin’s book has provided a giant red flag, illustrating a trajectory that will continue to accelerate as long as the 20 percent in the FTE sector are permitted to operate a country within America’s borders solely for themselves at the expense of the majority.
Without a robust middle class, America is not only reverting to developing-country status, it is increasingly ripe for serious social turmoil that has not been seen in generations.
In Other Words Revolution
Capitalism’s bad
I really hope i don’t see any fellow white Americans on this post talking about how we don’t deserve this because we’re “the greatest country in the world” or how “this shouldn’t be happening in America of all places”. It shouldn’t be happening ANYWHERE, it doesn’t need to be happening anymore, and the fact that it was already happening in predominantly nonwhite countries is largely the fault of white supremacy
If i’m telling you, “this is a hot plate.” But I make no effort to put it down, i’m internally yelling at you to move your shit. Your phone. Your keys. Your bread. Whatever is directly in front of you is from that point on is now classified as your shit. The shit you are suddenly responsibly for and I am burning my hands for. Move your shit. I’m not going to move it for you.
Shoutout to the people who see me approaching with their food and immediately start clearing the way for me. You are the real MVPs. You know what’s up. You understand.
As for everybody else. Move. Your. Shit.
Me
We see that and we respect the fuck out of you. Thank you.
